They called it one of the infamous Mudman years and for good reason. The mud wasn\u2019t just mud. It was alive. It clung to your frame, it laughed at your drivetrain, it turned once proud carbon machines into brake squealing sculptures of despair. You likely weren\u2019t able to shift gears that day, you negotiated with the shifter directly. Brakes stopped working somewhere around mile ten. Glasses? Useless. Every rider crossed the finish line looking like they\u2019d just crawled out of a trench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And it was glorious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you were there, you still tell the story…usually over a beer, always with that look in your eye that says \u201cI survived\u201d. If you weren\u2019t, you\u2019ve heard the legends. And yeah, it still tops 2019\u2019s Mudman year. Sorry, 2019\u2026much respect, but the OG still reigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now here we are again, staring at another second Saturday. The calendar doesn\u2019t lie. Will history repeat itself? Maybe. Probably. Honestly\u2026we\u2019re due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here\u2019s my confession\u2026I\u2019m a big fan of when things get rowdy, weird and you have to bring your entire cycling clothing collection. The kind of day where you start in three layers, shed two, regret everything and then wish you had mittens by mile twenty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because that\u2019s when Iceman gets good. The years that live forever aren\u2019t the ones where it all went smooth. They\u2019re the ones where nothing went according to plan. The ones where glasses fogged, fingers froze, tire pressure didn\u2019t matter (mostly) and somehow you still made it up Icebreaker. The ones where strangers on the trail became teammates because surviving felt bigger than racing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That\u2019s what makes Iceman Iceman. It\u2019s not just another Saturday on a bike. It\u2019s a gamble. A dare. A line you cross without knowing if you\u2019ll be high fiving at the finish or scraping mud off your derailleur in the woods. It\u2019s chaos wrapped up as tradition and that\u2019s why thousands of us keep coming back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So yeah, give me Mudman over Niceman every time. Clean bikes and fast times are fine, but they don\u2019t make the best stories. Stories are built in the sleet, in the snow, in the mud slop, in the sand, in the moments where the weather decides who really wants it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And if the second Saturday in November serves us another Mudman year? Even better. Because the worse it gets out there, the better the story gets later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
